Portals Vells
Portals Vells, also named Sa Caleta, is a small, sandy cove beach located on the southwest coast of the island, often regarded as one of the top 20 beaches in Mallorca. Despite being only 6 kilometers away from the lively party town of Magaluf, it offers a completely different atmosphere. Portals Vells beach offers a tranquil and serene atmosphere, favored by locals who appreciate its smaller size and the resulting fewer crowds. Tourists, as well as families, are drawn to the beauty of this beach, its calm waters, and its excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. Situated on the outskirts of the expansive Palma Bay, the beach measures only 30 meters in length and about 20 meters in width. Its limited size naturally restricts large crowds, though during peak summer months, arriving early is advisable to secure a spot. While there is a limited availability of umbrellas and lounge chairs for rent, many visitors prefer to lay their towels along the sandy shoreline or on the adjacent rocks. The beach is bordered by a forest of pine trees and gentle hills, providing a backdrop of natural beauty with minimal visible development. Although water activities are not available for rent here, visitors can enjoy the pristine waters for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Toilet facilities are available on-site, though there are no showers or changing rooms. Additionally, there is a single large restaurant serving delicious beach cuisine, Mallorcan specialties, and tapas for those seeking refreshment or a meal during their visit. In the vicinity of the beach, there are many points of scenic interest, among which stands out "La Cova de La Mare de Déu": an ancient marés quarry, whose stone blocks, extracted in the 14th and 15th centuries, were used to build the cathedral of Palma and the church of Santa Eulàlia. Access to Portals Vells beach by road is straightforward following road signage. You must pass Magaluf and continue towards Son Ferrer. 1.5 km before reaching this town, you should follow the signs indicating the road to Portals Vells. The beach offers free parking nearby. From here, you will reach Sa Caleta on foot. If you're lucky during the low season, you may even see dolphins.
